Woodhill Park Retreat

First NVivo 8 Workshops run by Woodhill Park Retreat staff announced.

On offer in New Zealand for the very first time by Woodhill Park Research Retreat staff are three Introductory NVivo 8 workshops (Introducing NVivo 8).  Each will be facilitated by Dr. Jens Hansen who is acknowledged internationally as a leading qualitative researcher and teacher of qualitative research computing.

  • The first of these will be held at Lincoln University on Friday 25th of July (contact Dr. Alison Kuiper at Lincoln University on 03 325 2811 ext 8963 );
  • The second will be held at the Woodhill Park Research Retreat on Saturday 26th of July (contact Jenny Hansen at the Woodhill Park Research Retreat 09 411 7703);
  • The third will be held at the Waiariki Institute of Technology on Thursday August 7th (contact Dr. Christine Mercer at Waiariki Institute of Technology 0800Waiariki)

Each workshop will begin at 9.30 a.m. and will finish at 4.30 p.m.  Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided at each workshop.  Accommodation is available for people travelling from out-of-town to the workshop that will be held at the Woodhill Park Research Retreat.  For accommodation cost details click here or contact Jenny (+64 9 411 7703).

Fees for the workshops at Lincoln University and the Waiariki Institute of Technology will be set by those institutions and will mainly be restricted to staff of those institutions.  However, the workshop at the Woodhill Park Research Retreat will cost each participant $180.00 plus GST.  Pre-payment for the Woodhill Park workshop must either be completed or guaranteed at the time of contacting Jenny because anyone cancelling will still be levied the full cost of workshop fees.

Due to the wide range and power of this software, this one-day course will focus on basic features of NVivo 8.  A more advanced NVivo 8 course (Extending NVivo 8 Analyses) will be held later in the year at Woodhill Park[1].  Contact Jenny now (09 411 7703) to register your interest.

Course Description

NVivo 8 is the most recent package to have been released by the team from QSR.  It assists researchers to handle complex qualitative data so that they can undertake intensive qualitative data analysis.  NVivo 8 creates a flexible environment in which you can create, manage and explore ideas. It also allows media such as video-clips, images, sound files, and rich text to be included as data.  Video and sound can transcribed and/or annotated within the software as a predicate to completing analysis.  The software enables detailed analysis and also includes a built in modeller as well as facilities which enable researchers to create output charts.

Target Group

These workshops are targeted at researchers who require an powerful and efficient tool with which to analyse qualitative data such as interviews, focus groups, and policy documents.  Please note that skills in Microsoft Windows are necessary in order to make the most of this course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Create their own NVivo 8 project and navigate around that project;
  • Create and import data including rich text documents, video, sound bytes and photos;
  • Create ‘nodes’ for storing the coding of data, and code at these nodes;
  • Perform searches within an NVivo project; and,
  • Report the results of analysis in an appropriate manner.

Course Structure

This course involves ‘hands-on’ learning and includes a mixture of facilitator-led instruction and independent learning.  Participants will need to have a stand alone copy of NVivo 8 loaded onto their computer.

Class Size

The typical class size is restricted to 12 participants but larger classes may be offered by negotiation.

Class Extension

This workshop can be extended to span two days which would enable participants to either cover further practice examples or allow them to work in a supervised manner with their own data.

TO ENROL FOR ANY ONE OF THESE WORKSHOPS, CONTACT THE PERSON NOMINATED AT THE VENUE OF YOUR CHOICE.  ENROLMENTS WILL BE TAKEN ON A FIRST COME FIRST IN BASIS.

[1] The ‘Extending NVivo 8 Analyses’ class will build on the basic functions learnt during the ‘Introduction to NVivo 8’ workshop.  This interactive workshop will focus on the more complex NVivo 8 tools and will explore the various means of extending and simplifying NVivo qualitative analyses.  Topics covered will include:

·          Revision of introductory NVivo 8 knowledge;

·          Coding extensions (auto-coding and relationships);

·          Audio and Video analyses;

·          Internal and external linking;

·          Cases and attributes;

·          Working with models; and
Complex searching.
